Specialists in Hand Surgery are accredited by the Specialty Accreditation Board (Ministry of Health, Singapore) and are represented academically by the Chapter of Hand Surgeons (Academy of Medicine, Singapore). Hand Surgery was established as an independent specialty in 1997. Trainees conventionally trained in Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery, and later spend three years in an advanced training program in Hand Surgery before attaining their accreditation. Since 2011, the former was superseded by an ACGME (Accredited Council in Graduate Medical Education) accredited six-year residency program for post internship doctor based on American style residency training in three ACGME-accredited public institutions (National University Health System, Singapore General Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital).
