The Singapore Society for Hand Surgery was incorporated in 1982 with Professor Robert Pho as its founding president. Originally formed as a forum for networking between orthopaedic and plastic surgeons with special interest in Hand Surgery, it has expanded its role to education of surgeons and therapists from Singapore and the region with regular lectures and courses on its calendar.
Hand Surgery has been an independent specialty in Singapore since 1997 with a dedicated training curriculum that encompass robust orthopaedic and reconstructive microsurgical exposure. In the current ACGME based system, trainees spend two years in various surgical and medical specialties early in their training to broaden their perspective, and the final four years of their residency in three accredited national training centres - National University Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Singapore General Hospital. SSHS is an affiliate of the IFSSH (International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand) and APFSSH (Asia Pacific Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand). Its therapy section is affiliated with IFSHT (International Federation of Societies for Hand Therapy). Members receive journal access (Journal of Hand Surgery, Asia Pacific Volume) and invitations to dinner lectures by visiting experts. |
